Oncology Massage

This foun­da­tion course will cov­er can­cer relat­ed pathol­o­gy, his­to­ry of treat­ments, types of treat­ments includ­ing surgery, chemother­a­py and radi­a­tion, treat­ment side effects, mas­sage con­traindi­ca­tions, and pre­cau­tions.
 
The ben­e­fits of mas­sage and ses­sion adap­ta­tions for the patient with can­cer are dis­cussed. Breast surg­eries that treat can­cer and lym­phedema be will be dis­cussed. Drap­ing and posi­tional chal­lenges will be addressed, with solu­tions.
 
Com­mu­nity edu­ca­tion and mar­ket­ing strate­gies will be dis­cussed. Stu­dents will learn to design a mas­sage treat­ment plan based on the pre­sen­ta­tion of the patient; whether in active can­cer treat­ment, in the advanced stages or years lat­er in sur­vivor­ship. Instruc­tor will also arrange to have can­cer patients come in for demon­stra­tion and shar­ing of their expe­ri­ences.
 
Pre­req­ui­site: Mas­sage Ther­a­pist or Body­worker, or Stu­dent Mas­sage Ther­a­pist or Body­worker. Open to oth­er health­care pro­fes­sion­als.
